Abstract

The role of polarisation of Cherenkov radiation is a topic seldom discussed in the context of imaging Cherenkov telescope (IACT) systems. A Monte-Carlo simulation code based on CORSIKA was developed to study the effect of Cherenkov radiation polarisation in IACT. The IACT we simulated for this study is VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System), a four-telescope array based in Arizona, USA. The general properties of the distribution of polarisation vectors on the camera and the ground are shown. The potential of using polarised filters on the VERITAS camera is also demonstrated. We show that the effective areas and signal-to-noise ratios with polarisers are enhanced compared to simpler filters. We also show that the gamma-hadron separation technique for normal observations applies to observations with polarisers.
