Online education is a rapidly growing area in our college education system. However, the current online education system faces a lot of difficulties, which is counterproductive to its success. This paper will point out the current problems and what is missing in the online education system. Student discipline, lack of assistance, failure to deliver course information, missing peer study, and social communication are problems that exist. These problems are affecting the retention rate of the online courses. This paper will also discuss how to use social media software and how it can demonstrate and fulfill its need to make online education as good as tradition face-to-face education. From the study we can see that by applying social media software, it will change the teaching and studying behavior. Those changes make online education more effective and efficient. Social media software may be the key to help the success of the online education. However, there are improvements will still be required. And as the time goes, technology will also help us to develop the new and better ways to solve the problems.
