There has long been speculation as to the mechanism by which antibody molecules acquire their specificity. In the decade between 1951 and 1961 the central role of the nucleic acids in the regulation of prote in synthesis was recognized and various molecular types of ribonucleic acids (RNA) were isolated and characterized. The existence of a messenger RNA which could carry the information for protein synthesis from the nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the cell to the ribosomes of the cytoplasm where protein synthesis occurred was predicted.
