"The date of discovery of Saltpeter Cave is not known and there is no way of determining it. Numerous accounts are given of the cave by the oldest settlers in the neighborhood, some of which are both startling and interesting. for instance, it is reported that the soldiers of the Confederate army visited this cave for the purpose of securing guano from which to extract saltpeter for use in the manufacture of gunpowder.
