Abstract

This research project concerns the Bondevik (2001-2005) and the Stoltenberg (2005-2009) governments’ decisions to commit military forces to international military operations in the 2000’s. The government’s management of requests from NATO and the United States, to contribute with military means to Iraq and Afghanistan in the time-period 2001- 2009 has been studied. The aim of this case study is to consider the extent to which domestic policy considerations modify the influence of alliance dependency on Norwegian foreign and security policy, and how this influenced Norwegian commitment to contribute to international military operations. The two theories used to structure the analysis, is alliance dependency theory and two-level game theory.
