Abstract

The purpose of this study focused on the authentic leadership of pastors within the Church of God (COG) in Illinois to determine if it was related to their ministerial effectiveness. Since ministerial effectiveness within the church varies, the data from this study examined whether ministerial effectiveness was correlated with the authentic leadership of pastors within the COG. This study did not discover a positive correlation between pastors who have higher levels of authentic leadership and who also exhibit ministerial effectiveness. The relationship between ministerial effectiveness and authentic leadership was explored by administrating two survey instruments: The Authentic Leadership Inventory and the Ministerial Effectiveness Inventory. Leadership effectiveness is often conceptualized in terms of how it is measured. Leadership effectiveness is most commonly evaluated using subordinates, peers, and/or supervisors ratings rather than objective performance outcomes. The pastors (i.e., leaders) who participated in this study were ordained pastors within the COG. The laity (i.e., followers) who participated in this study were members of the churches from which the pastors had been sampled. Each participant completed both surveys. The responses of this sample either did not indicate a significant correlation, or indicated a statistically weak correlation between authentic leadership and ministerial effectiveness. The recommendation of this writer would be to conduct further research within other COG regions to see if the results were consistent with the results of this study. The results from this study could be used by scholars in theological schools, seminaries, and Christian universities for conducting additional research into whether a relationship exists between authentic leadership and ministerial effectiveness and whether this relationship differs between denominations and congregations.
