In the thesis, we were interested to explore the impact of acute and chronicserotonergic and noradrenergic receptor activity enhancement on functional plasticityof the human brain. Furthermore, we investigated the acute and chronic effects ofnoradrenaline on cortical excitability in humans. The first chapter introduces basicmechanisms relevant for understanding the studies included in the thesis. The secondchapter consists of the papers presenting the research results. The concluding chaptersummarizes the main results of the studies and offers an outlook to future research inthe field.Advisors/Committee Members: Nitsche, Michael (advisor), Niklas, Andree (referee), Blumentritt, Siegmar (referee).
