Abstract

This work aims at how and to what extent the use of games can help in the understanding of the lesson. We have based this work on the communicative and cognitive approach, Piagetian theory, Theory of Freud and the Monitor theory by Krashen. The analysis is based on data collected through questionnaires distributed to selected students and teachers. We realized through this work that many students face different problems when it comes to the use of games as teaching aids. This discourages the teachers who in turn ignore the games sometimes and this makes the teaching and the learning of the language very difficult for them. We also discovered some games which we grouped under linguistic, role play and sketch games. The games under the various types promote critical thinking, creativity, knowledge acquisition and personal development. We strongly advise the use of games in the teaching of the French language as foreign language. Teachers of French are therefore to be motivated in order to use the games as part of teaching activities in the classroom.
