In this thesis it is researched how the Dutch media discourse about battling Kurdish female combatants has changed, since they are fighting the Islamic State (IS). Ever since the female Kurdish warriors are involved in the battle against the Islamic State, they are perceived as 'amazons of the free world', but before this battle they were perceived as terrorists. In this thesis it is research how this image has changed and which role the notions of feminism, emancipation and ethnocentrism have in this process. Advisors/Committee Members: Midden, Eva.
