This work is a statistical regression on hate crimes designed to determine whether an external factor exists that causes them to correlate with each other. The analysis finds that this is the case. The study draws upon the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) data on Hate Crimes as reported in the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) for the years of 1996 through 2011. Regressing the data against each other suggests that an external factor – which theory and existing literature suggest to be youth culture – possesses a general, broad impact on hate crime. The general increase in the rates of different types of hate crime appear to be attributable more to this factor than simple opportunity and prejudice which are commonly argued to drive the incidence of hate crimes.
