Abstract

This paper has three sections, the first one is related to wind energy, the second is related to power filters used to mitigate the harmonics, and the third is related to modulated power filter compensators. The first part will deal with wind energy, wind turbines, types of turbines and generators used for producing electricity from windmills. Also, the equation that is used to calculate the power from the wind is discussed. In second part I will discuss Active and Passive power filters, their types, functions and advantages and disadvantages. The final section presents a modulated power filter compensator (MPFC) that is used to stabilize the voltage and reduce the total harmonic distortion. The device known as MPFC is a member of a flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) based compensators/modulated power filters. The MPFC is controlled by the dynamic tri-loop error driven PI controller. The dynamic tri-loop controls the switches of the MPFC.
