Physical environment affects social engagement among seniors. In recent decades, increasing number of studies has shown that the lack of group activities and mutual interactions can cause mental instabilities among senior people. The purpose of this project was to identify spatial design elements that can contribute to a better environment for social interactions for senior residents in an assisted living facility (ALF). The literature review examined the spatial design solutions that enhance group interactions in an ALF. This graduate project suggests redesign lobby, corridor, activity room, lounge and game room through creating a cluster layout, semi-privacy sitting area and homelike environment.
