Abstract

I look for the cosmopolitan similarities between Eastern and Western culture. My recent artwork focuses on celebrity obsession, and on representing people who have gained celebrity status. I choose a range of celebrities - some famous and some infamous. Some celebrities are known for actually doing something, and others are known only for being famous. I use photo references of wax models I have taken at the Philadelphia and New York wax museums. These photographs are appropriated to emphasize the artificial in celebrity culture and the para-social interaction of a real person who assumes the role of a cartoon or caricature. In my work, I try to deconstruct the intimate relationship between truth and falsehood, reality and illusion. Through my artistic process I represent my personal concerns as the third person, capturing a freeze-frame of our reality. I pursue spiritual expression that comes from the universal reaction of the populace to their favorite celebrities. And, I try to create images, which embody a particular culture religion, or phenomenon.
