Abstract

"Water is often carried from place to place in artificial channels, such as troughs, aqueducts, ditches and canals. A launder is, specifically speaking, a trough, and it is with this that this article will treat. It is the purpose of this investigation to discover, if possible, first, the maximum carrying power of water when transporting chert; second, to find the relation existing between the velocities of different sized chert" – Introduction, p. 1.
