"During the past decade, man has found the courage to drill for oil at those forbidding locations which were made inaccessible by several feet of water. Some of the major fields of the world have been developed by this new manner of work, and others might have been added had the stage been set for the play. The most spectacular marine oil field development occurred along the Santa Barbara Coast of California from 1929 to 1931. It was the writer's good fortune to have been an assistant to Mr. Hans E. A. Gude, the field engineer of Pacific Western Oil Company in the Elwood Oil Field, which is situated fourteen miles west of Santa Barbara. A year was devoted to this fascinating work, and since that time, it has been his desire to prepare a paper on Marine Foundations for Ocean Oil Wells" – Introduction.
