Abstract

There is no evidence to prove that our commerce has increased as a result of the open door" policy. The statistics show that America's commerce with China experienced a steady growth during the decade and a half beginning with 1890, but decreased from 1905 until 1911. The decline might have been even more perceptible had it not been for the policy pursued by the American Government, but the fact remains that there was a decline. The cause for this peculiar phenomenon, however, may be due to reasons entirely foreign to the 'open door' policy." – Page 130.
