All the six possible isomeric xylenols have been described are with one exception crystalline solids. [Diagrams] Since the phenolic (OH) group is a strong activating group and exerts a strong o-p directing influence during substitution in the benzene ring, the monochloro compounds formed by direct chlorination of the xylenols would therefore be expected to have the chlorine atoms in positions o- or p- to this phenolic group.
