The more detailed study of the epilepsies carried out by Dr. Penfield and his co-workers has demonstrated that luany forms of epilepsy are of focal origin (Penfield and Erickson, 1941). Very often these foci are found in the cerebral cortex. The symptoms before, during and following the seizures point to definite localizations. However, certain forms of epilepsy have defied attempts at localization. Seizures consisting of generalized convulsions, without detectable aura, involving large portions of the central nervous system, are as yet difficult to understand as the outflow of a localized source or focus within the brain.[...]
