Abstract

Chemical compounds containing the indole nucleus are distributed widely in nature, and available evidence indicates that they play important roles in the metabolism of plants and animals. The most important of these compounds is tryptophane, an amino acid, which was isolated first by Hopkins and Cole (82) in 1901, from a pancreatic digest of casein. [...]
