[...] With these thoughts in mind, the present work on five species of Canadian deciduous trees, which fall into three distinct groups as regards changes in water content, has been undertaken. Microscopic observation and quantitative analysis have both been employed. Particular attention has been directed to the hemicellulose fraction although investigation of the seasonal changes in water content, starch and fat was also undertaken. The literature of a number of authors cited in the historical section of the literature review has not been read by the present writer. The source of this information is indicated in the bibliography after each citation.
