Abstract
The action of chlorine dioxide and of sodium chlorite, two new bleaching agents used to remove dark coloured lignin impurities from wood pulps, was studied on a wood lignin that had been isolated without much chemical change. Both oxidants produced similar results, converting the insoluble, presumably nonphenolic lignin first into alkali-soluble phenolic substances. [...]
