Efficiencies were calculated for the rectification of benzene-toluene in a square, plywood column containing eight copper plates, 11 inches by 11.5 inches. The plates supported three rectangular bubble caps. The column was run under total reflux conditions at superficial vapor velocities of less than 0.5 foot per second with various plate spacings. The effect of condensation and its relation to heat loss and plate efficiency are discussed. Design calculations for the column are given.
