The purpose of this research was to investigate the utility of Rossby's wave equation in the westerlies at the 500 millibar level by statistical methods. Also a statistical analysis was made to investigate just how wave length, zonal index and latitude contribute to the movement of troughs in the westerlies. This work was conducted at the United States Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, during the period December 1948 to May 1949. It was done to meet partial requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Aerology. The idea for the investigation was suggested by Professor F. L. Martin of the staff of the Department of Aerological Engineering of the United States Naval Postgraduate School.
