"The producer of crude oil experiences a continuous source of trouble and loss in the emulsion problem. These emulsions cannot be entirely discarded for several reasons: First because it is a waste of natural resource and second because there are such large quantities that no feasible outlet could be found on account of fire hazard and stream polution [sic]. Further to keep these emulsions in storage for slow settling puts a storage burden on the producers. To handle the emulsions most economically many producers are treating them and a large number of methods for treating have been devised. The object of this work is to study some of the so called chemical methods and treating petroleum emulsions and to endeavor to find other chemicals to aid in treating" – Introduction, p. 4.
