Abstract

A derivation and application of the Kozeny equation, relating permeability to fluids and specific surface of porous material, are given. The permeability method of surface area measurement has been applied to fibrous materials such as fiber glass, respirator filter pads and sulphite pulp. The change in specific surface of sulphite pulp with beating has been determined. A lower limit has been found for the porosity of pulp beds below which the method is not applicable. A general trend of increasing surface area with volume activity has been found for similar respirator charcoals. An absolute particulate density has been found for charcoal from the relation between the apparent densities, found by immersion in liquids, and the surface tensions of the liquids.
