Abstract

It has been traditionally assumed by most physicians that illnesses of the body are to be treated as such; and that they are not related to the problems of the psychiatrist or the psychologist. In the treatment of skin diseases, it might be reasonable, then, to suppose that one would be concerned solely with salves, ointments, and such specific care of the affected areas. During the past twenty-five years, however, it has become generally recognised, both by physicians and by psychologists, that such an approach to medical problems leaves out of account many factors which it would be profitable to study and which are relevant to treatment.
