Studies of photochemical and atomic processes are of the greatest importance to the elucidation of the mechanism of thermal reactions. The application of these powerful modes of attack has, owing to the lack of suitable experimental teohniques, until recently been limited to the more simple compounds. Lately, however, the development of improved light sources and more precise and comprehensive methods of analysis, together with the use of isotopes for the labelling of atoms in reactions, have greatly extended the scope of these methods.
