"In the past the Engineering Department of the structural steel company, by which the writer is employed, has been troubled with having to make a large number of preliminary steel truss designs for the purpose of estimating weights for competitive bids on structural steel building contracts. In order to eliminate this expenditure of time, a study was made of the possibility of making a standard design for curved chord steel roof trusses that would give the desired information by observation" – Truss Design, p. 5.
