The purpose of this thesis is to show means for the development of the marching band in the small high school. Before considering the problem, however, it seemed necessary to appraise marching bands in the light of their educational value. Marching bands in the small high school have been developed in recent years because school administrators were convinced of their educational value as a part of the music department program. This is shown by statements of music educators and authorities in the field of instrumental music and by response through correspondence, which sampled the opinion of school administrators.
