The condition of heat exhaustion, insolation or heat stroke has, in the past ten years, been thoroughly studied from a clinical point of view by observations of the signs and symptoms of the recovery cases, together with autopsies of the fatal cases. The condition is one of extreme exhaustion or depression, in which the temperature of the patient is considerably above normal, and apparently beyond the control of the heat regulating apparatus; and in which, as is made evident by the changes in the parenchyma of the organs, the metabolic processes are carried on at an extremely rapid rate. In cases of recovery the patient may show no permanent effect, but in those cases in which there is a permanent disturbance, it is in most cases a lesion of the nervous system.
