Abstract

The interaction of 4, 4-dimethylhomophthalimide with phosphorus oxychloride at 200° was reported by Gabriel Ber. 20 , 1205 (1837) to furnish a product C11H9Cl2N. A structure, corresponding to that of 1-chloro-3-methyl-4-chloromethylisoquinoline, which is arrived at by application of electronic theory is different from the structures tentatively suggested for the C11H9Cl2N product by Gabriel. The object of the present work was to demonstrate the structure of the molecule. [TRUNCATED]
