; Entropy and temperature are presented as field values defined in terms of local spacetime averages of atomistic quantities, and thereby a non-traditional connection between macroscopic thermodynamics and microscopic physics is established, without use of probability distributions and averaging over ensembles. By analysis of the inference between descriptions of a thermomechanical system on different spacetime scales it is shown why the second law of thermodynamics must be a restriction on constitutive equations rather than on processes and how this is connected to the concept of reproducibility and the very notion of a macroscopic theory.
