Abstract

The subsea industry is facing a rapid growth and is predicted a strong future expansion. Such an expansion demands innovation in the subsea lifecycle service. Aker Solutions at Ågotnes has no existing R&D department. This thesis studies employees at Aker Solutions Subsea Lifecycle Services, and their perceptions about the current and future R&D work. The study is conducted with performance indicators from balanced scorecard theory through a survey and interviews. To my knowledge this is a novel way of utilizing the balanced scorecard framework. My findings do not indicate organizational resistance regarding a future R&D department; it rather uncovers a shared positive expectation. Practically, the all over positive perceptions of the employees encourage an establishment of an R&D department. Further on, employees seems to believe that the future will be better with an R&D department. Financials and customers involved, and a thorough strategy for the R&D department, must however be further investigated and applied.
