Abstract

This master thesis investigates the use of dual layer virtualisation to create a homogenous computing environment and enable live migration between cloud providers. Dual layer virtualisation was successfully implemented using QEMU to emulate a Xen hypervisor enabling live migration between cloud environments. However the performance impact of the implementation shows 2.5 times slower execution time for CPU bound tasks and 40 times performance penalty for disk I/O. Nevertheless, anticipated future technology improvements and cloud provider practices could very likely result in these current deficiencies being overcome.
