Studier gjort på HIV-smittede barn, viser at antall orale lesjoner knyttet til sykdommen reduseres signifikant hos pasienter unde HAART-behandling, sammenliknet med pasienter utenfor antiviral behandling A student project done in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2007-2009 shows that HIV infected children on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) show a significant lower number of oro-facial lesions than children not on HAART. The study group in this paper consists of 92 children on HAART, whilst the control group consists of 289 children not on HAART examined in Cape Peninsula from 1999-2001.
