Abstract

In this pilot study, we obtained the peri-prosthetic fibrous membrane of eleven patients undergoing hip revision surgery due to aseptic loosening. We investigated the molecular content of the tissue by real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and the structural properties by histology and confocal microscopy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoindentation were used to determine the mechanical properties of the peri-prosthetic tissue, respectively at the nano- and microscopic scale. Finally, the AFM data was evaluated using the statistical finite mixture models theory, to link the contributions of different constituents of this heterogeneous tissue to the measured mechanical properties
