Abstract

This thesis describes and analyzes behavior models of the Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon epic heroes. By describing the main characters of the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf and the characters of some of the poems of the Poetic Edda, it focuses mostly on studying qualities that make these heroes epic and on comparing these two different models. It also studies the specific attributes of the epic genre itself. The subjects of this study are the characters of the Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon epic genre, their behavioral patterns that are associated with behavioral practice rituals. The purpose of this research is to comprehend the phenomenon of heroic behavior as a factor in the development of the Old Norse society, ideological background of the beginning of the Viking expansion and the element of the cultural code, which formed a behavioral model of Scandinavian male warrior.
