Abstract

The thesis deals with two coeval historical developments since the Second World War: European integration and decolonization. These processes have long been regarded as unrelated strands of history. This study, however, questions the dichotomization between the end of European empires and the origins of European integration. It is argued that during the period of 1945–1963, these two developments were closely interconnected. In the post-war years, the Western European states put high hopes in the continuation of imperial rule, but hesitated to engage in European economic integration. A fundamental change occurred during the 1950s, when the significance of empire declined and that of “Europe” increased. When the European Economic Community (EEC) was established in 1957, the overseas territories were “associated” with it. Decolonization around 1960, however, brought an end to the association scheme and “decolonized” European integration. The case is made that imperial commitments and changes at the colonial level played an important role in the early European integration process. Í ritgerðinni er fjallað um þá þróun sem varð samtímis á tveimur sviðum eftir lok síðari heimsstyrjaldar: endalok nýlendustefnunnar og upphaf Evrópusamrunans. Löngum hefur verið litið á þessa þætti sem tvö óskyld söguleg fyrirbæri. Hér er hins vegar sú söguskoðun dregin í efa. Færð eru rök fyrir því að á tímabilinu 1945–1963 hafi bein tengsl verið á milli endaloka nýlendustefnunnar og uppruna Evrópusamvinnunnar. Eftir stríðslok höfðu Evrópuþjóðir háleitar hugmyndir um að halda nýlendum sínum. Minni áhersla var hins vegar lögð á stofnanalega efnahagssamvinnu milli þeirra. Á þessu varð grundvallarbreyting á sjötta áratug 20. aldar, þegar mikilvægi evrópsku nýlenduríkjanna dvínaði en vægi „Evrópu“ jókst. Árið 1957 var Efnahagsbandalag Evrópu (EBE) stofnað, þar sem svæðin utan Evrópu fengu aukaaðild. Afnám nýlendustefnunnar um 1960 batt hins vegar enda á þátttöku nýlenduríkjanna í Evrópusamstarfinu. Því er haldið fram að tengsl heimsveldanna við nýlendur sínar og þær breytingar, sem urðu í nýlendunum eftir síðari heimsstyrjöld, hafi vegið þungt á fyrstu stigum evrópska sameiningarferlisins.
