Abstract

An Attempt has been made to discuss the state policy towards the peasantry Indeed the state adopted at occasions certain measures to offer protection to the peasantry against certain evils But all such measures of the state were not entirely sufficient enough to put the peasantry on a way of prosperity and happiness Therefore the benevolent policy of the state must never be taken as a final conclusion of our problem under the study Because such policy was governed more by economic rather than humanitarian considerations The first chapter of the work deals in some length with the historical background of the agrarian system of Kashmir from early times The second chapter highlights the agricultural produce taking into account various crops of the valley The third chapter brings within the focuss the problem of ownership of land The fourth chapter enlists and enumerates the nature of various assignments and grants made by the state from time to time The fifth chapter determines various aspects of land revenue newlineand sixth chapter illuminates various functionaries of the land revenue administration Chapter seventh is devoted to a discussion on the causes and consequences of the natural calamities that befell the valley so frequently Eighth chapter newlineattempts at discussing the state policy towards the peasantry The last chapter is offered to a discussion of various factors which equally contributed to the worsening of the condition of the peasantry in Kashmir%%%
