Abstract

Urban agglomerations are under the twin pressures urbanization newlineand globalization and cities in India are no exception to this The effect of this newlineis profound on the urban fabric in areas where old settlements are in long newlineexistence The factors and elements that are attributed to positive newlineenvironmental quality are multi disciplinary in nature ranging from social newlineeconomic cultural administrative political and physical Factors that lead to newlinea positive environmental quality are found to vary with age of settlement and newlinescale of analysis newlineChennai which was originally known as Madras is one of the four newlinemetropolis of India has a history dating back to many centuries Due to the newlinelong existence of urbanism settlements in Chennai have evolved over a newlineperiod enriching the existing urban fabric with many layers added on Some newlineof the traditional settlements have managed to retain their character and newlineidentity The rapid urbanization in the past two or three decades coupled with newlineglobalization are threatening to totally erode the environmental quality of newlinethese settlements In this context the present study titled Perspectives and newlineattributes of environmental quality in transitional urban areas a study in newlineThiruvanmiyur Chennai India was conducted newlineThe research assesses the environmental quality at macro and micro newlinelevels in Thiruvanmiyur a division of Chennai on the Southern side newline newline%%%appendix p279-286, reference p287-298.
