Abstract

Traditional architectural principles always respected nature climate newlineConscious user friendly reflected the culture and tradition of the community at large and most important was contextual Various parameters such as geographical location climatic conditions occupation culture and tradition of the society community decide these principles in a specific set up and make the structures sustainable in all respect So this research aims to explore and understand the sustainable design principles in the vernacular architecture of Thanjavur region Tamil Nadu India The analysis of these architectural design principles which make the vernacular dwellings sustainable will provide useful insights for the designers of today to create appropriate buildings suitable to that particular context An analysis of dwellings in three newlineidentified settlements of Thanjavur region Tamil Nadu India provides a newlinecontext for the field research Thanjavur is one of the important traditional towns, located in the geographical centre of Tamil Nadu and possesses rich cultural and vernacular tradition Courtyard houses forms the basic characteristic feature of Thanjavur vernacular architecture which predominantly has three distinct typologies of dwellings Typology 1 consists of dwellings with central courtyard typology newline2 consists of dwellings with side courtyard and typology 3 consists of newlinedwellings with a central double height ceiling with clerestorey openings newline newline%%%appendix p210-220, reference p221-225.
