Abstract

Elastomeric products are subjected to compressive loading in newlinevariety of applications such as compression springs mountings and newlinecushioning components Rubbers are relatively soft materials that undergo newlinelarge deformation upon loading The deformation behavior of elastomeric newlinematerials under large strain is still far from being understood today newlineA substantial body of research work on rubber blocks compressed between newlinerigid plates has been developed although many of the problems remain newlineunsolved There are cases where rubbers can undergo noticeable volumetric newlinedeformation under large strain applications A precise measurement of newlinecompression deformation and its corresponding change in the lateral newlinedimensions are required for a quantitative understanding of the behavior of newlinerubber blocks under large strains newlineCompression and shear deformation behavior of rubber blocks newlineunder higher strain have been evaluated experimentally in this investigation newlinewhich could further support the currently adopted approximate analytical newlinemethods The estimation of the maximum bulge radius at different strain newlinelevels plays an important role in characterizing the deformation behavior of newlinerubber blocks An imaging tool has been developed and used for the newlinequantitative measurements of deformation and its associated maximum bulge newlineradius Rmax under large strains newline newline%%%reference p201-211.
