Abstract

India has been the leader of therapeutic field by pioneering the use of medicinal newlineplants. Out of many important medicinal plant being used in the therapeutic field. Swertia newlinechirayita is one important plant of them. It is critically endangered species (CAMP 2003), newlinewhich is widely used in Indian System of Medicine especially for the treatment of many newlinechronic and regular diseases like malaria, intermittent fever, liver weakness and Diabetes newlinetype-II. In Ayurveda the action of Swertia chirayita (Roxb. ex Fleming) H. Karst. ( Family newlineGentianaceae) is as bitter tonic, stomachic, febrifuge and anthelmintic. An infusion of the newlinedrug is generally employed, but it forms part of many therapeutic preparations. The main newlineaim, of the present study, is to investigate the medicinal values of those plants which possess newlinespecial niche in ISM. It is observed that Swertia chirayita plant is of valuable importance in newlinepharmaceutical applications but very low amount of research work has been carried out on newlinethis plant, as the general climatic conditions of its agro-climatic zones are not found in large newlinegeographical areas with conditions for its cultivation as the species is highly area specific in newlineterms of topography, soil conditions and other meteorological attributes. newlineThe study site of the current research area is Garhwal Himalayas lying between newline290 newline26and#146; to 310 newline28and#146;N-latitude and 770 newline49and#146; to 800 newline 6and#146; E- longitudes. The plant specimen of newlineSwertia chirayita were collected in the end of September 2011 from two different known newlinelocations, the first being from the Kauntalani Nursery, which is located at N-300 45and#146;123and#148; newlinelatitude and E- 0770 newline 53and#146;00: and is 2580 m.amsl. [Fortrex 201 GPS]. Kauntalani Nursery newlinebelongs to the Chakrata Forest Division, District Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand.%%%References p. 95-108
