Abstract

Indian power sector is passing through a transition stage, The current installed capacity of electricity generation in the country is 2,29,251, 74 MW as on 31st Oct, 2013, against only 1362 MW in 1947, This comes to capacity addition of just 3500 MW per year since independence, As per 2012 report by the International Energy Agency IEA, it is estimated that nearly 25 percent of Indian population lacks basic access to electricity, while electrified areas suffer from rolling electricity blackouts, This is due to inadequacies in generation, transmission and distribution as well as inefficient use of electricity and disruptions in fuel supply to power plants, Very high level of technical and commercial losses and lack of commercial approach in management of utilities has led to unsustainable financial operations newline
