Abstract

Estuaries discharge large quantity of nutrients into the ocean The nature and distribution of the flora and fauna in an estuary is controlled by the fluctuations in the physico chemical characteristics of water Accelerated population growth and development in the coastal zone accompanied by increasing urbanization and industrialization are closely coupled for the adverse environmental impacts which have compromised the ecological integrity of many estuaries The movement of water through estuaries is an important factor in determining the distribution of pollutants or nutrients Estuarine transport can be studied by field observation as well as analytical and numerical modeling In the present study numerical modeling of Uppanar estuary was attempted using MIKE 21 hydrodynamic and advection dispersion modules with validation using field data newlineCuddalore port an important minor port of Tamilnadu in the East coast of India is located on Gadilam river of Uppanar estuary on the banks of which most of the industries of State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamilnadu SIPCOT are situated The estuary and seawater qualities are very badly affected by the discharges from SIPCOT complex which includes major units like pharmaceutical dyes pesticides organic chemicals and inorganic chemicals manufacturing units newline newline%%%reference p217-224.
