Abstract

The nickel based super alloys are extensively used in aerospace newlineapplications such as gas turbines rocket motors and spacecrafts nuclear newlinereactors pumps and tooling This extensive use is due to their high newlinetemperature and high corrosion resistance properties These superalloys are newlinealso known as the most difficult to machine materials From the past decades newlineonly few researchers are involved in machining of superalloy materials The newlinemachining of these alloys are done using the high speed dry and wet newlineconventional machining processes To improve the Material Removal Rate newline MRR in these conventional machining processes tools such as coated and newlineuncoated PCBN tools film coated tools tungsten carbide K20 insert and newlinedifferent powder coated tools are used Still they are considered as difficultto newlinemachine materials by any conventional machining processes Their poor newlinemachinability property of super alloys leads to high tooling cost by using newlinetraditional machining processes EDM is one of the most successful newlineprofitable and extensively used non conventional machining processes for newlineelectrically conductive materials irrespective of materials hardness Hence newlineEDM process becomes a natural choice for machining of nickel based super newlineAlloys EDM has been explored to machine these alloys by using electrodes newlinemade up of different materials newline newline%%%appendix p86-112, reference p113-123.
