Anticipation has often been discussed in interpreting theory, especially as one of the strategies employed during simultaneous interpreting. Among the various definitions that have been formulated for anticipation there is a broad consensus that anticipation is the result of the early understanding of the source-language text development. The present work concentrates on those anticipation instances that take shape in the target text, as constituents that are expressed earlier than their corresponding terms in the source text. Previous research concludes that among the most important triggers of anticipation are the syntactic differences between the source and target languages of the interpreting language pair. This doctoral research project explores the role of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting from German to Greek, two languages characterised by significantly different syntactic structures. To this end, a contrastive analysis of the two languages is carried out, highlighting their most important interpreting-related syntactic differences. Research questions are formulated regarding simultaneous interpreters’ use of strategic anticipation. The questions are tested against a corpus of German speeches in the European Parliament and their respective Greek interpretations. The corpus analysis led to the conclusion that strategic anticipation is indeed used in German-to-Greek simultaneous interpreting at points where the syntax between the two languages differs the most: interpreters in this corpus apply the strategy of anticipation in more than 60% of the cases that demand a strategic response, and they do so, in the majority of the cases, with great success. Η τακτική της προήγησης είναι ένα από τα πιο πολυσυζητημένα ζητήματα στη θεωρία της ταυτόχρονης διερμηνείας. Το πλήθος των ορισμών που έχουν προταθεί για την προήγηση συμφωνεί ότι δεν θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει προήγηση εάν δεν υπήρχε έγκαιρη κατανόηση της εξέλιξης του νοήματος του κειμένου πηγή. Η παρούσα εργασία επικεντρώνεται σε εκείνες τις περιπτώσεις προήγησης οι οποίες παίρνουν μορφή στο κείμενο στόχο, ως τμήματα λόγου τα οποία εκφέρονται πριν ο ομιλητής τα εκφέρει στο κείμενο πηγή. Ήδη πριν την παρούσα εργασία υπήρχε συναίνεση μεταξύ των ερευνητών ότι ένα από τα κίνητρα της προήγησης είναι οι συντακτικές διαφορές μεταξύ της γλώσσας πηγής και της γλώσσας στόχου του διερμηνευτικού ζεύγους γλωσσών. Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή διερευνά το ρόλο της προήγησης κατά την ταυτόχρονη διερμηνεία από τη Γερμανική στην Ελληνική, δύο γλώσσες, οι οποίες χαρακτηρίζονται από σημαντικές διαφορές στις συντακτικές τους δομές. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο διεξάγεται αντιπαραβολή των δύο γλωσσών, προκειμένου να αναδειχθούν οι σημαντικότερες, ως προς τη διαδικασία της διερμηνείας, συντακτικές διαφορές. Διατυπώνονται ερωτήματα εργασίας σχετικά με τη χρήση από τον ταυτόχρονο διερμηνέα της τακτικής της προήγησης. Τα ερωτήματα απαντώνται βάσει σώματος πρωτότυπων ομιλιών στη γερμανική γλώσσα στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο καθώς και των αντιστοίχων ελληνικών διερμηνειών. Η ανάλυση του…
