Abstract

The main focus of this project is the relationship between language and culture and the relation to the process of translating a text from its original language to a foreign language such as Italian. The text analyzed in this project is a fragment from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K Rowling as an example of the attempt to maintain the different cultural background feature in a writing text when translated. The background theories have been collected from three main articles in the field of sociolinguistics and cultural studies. The conclusion is that distinctive features of a language that symbolized its culture are difficult to be maintained in a written text when translated therefore, ‘lost in translation’.
