This project brings an analysis of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon set-in the environment of Oceania in George Orwell’s novel, 1984. The society immersed in the most brutal version of totalitarianism comes to us as a warning that Orwell saw in his lifetime. Using Michel Foucault’s work allows us to shed more light on the exercise of power in a panoptical setting through knowledge, discipline and punishment. Subsequently, we will project the novel into the present in order to compare how the surveillance was imagined back then – according to Orwell – and how it turned out to be after almost seventy years since the book’s publication.
