With basis in circular economy the motivation is the need for increased resource efficiency to keep societal economic activities at a sustainable level within planetary boundaries. The current ELV management scheme results in most automotive plastics being incinerated or deposited in landfills. This study focuses on increased dismantling to answer the research question: How can the Danish ELV management scheme be structured to promote a circular flow of plastics from ELVs? Literature studies, statistics, interviews, field trips and calculations of economic consequences for the car dismantlers are used in an analysis of current practice and the proposed scheme. It is concluded that the current market prices on plastics do not provide a sufficient incentive for the car dismantler to dismantle more plastics for recycling. A scheme is suggested where the sales price for plastic materials is multiplies with a factor to provide this incentive. It is recommended that car owners finance this scheme through a specific scrapping premium and that the factor is dynamic to follow the market price.
